$1,000 Square Dance Nut Cake Recipe

Sift together: 1 2/3 c Pillsbury flour

2 ts Baking powder

1/2 ts Salt

1 c Sugar

Add: 1/2 c Soft butter

Half shortening may be used) 2/3 c Milk

Beat for 2 minutes then add 3 Egg whites unbeaten

1/2 ts Lemon extract

And beat for 2 minutes then Blend in 1/2 cup chp walnuts Checkerboard frosting: Combine 1 tb Warm milk

2 tb Melted butter

2 1/4 c Confectioners sugar

1 Egg yolk

1/2 ts Vanilla

Beat until smooth and creamy -. Add: 1 Melted chocolate and

1 tb Milk

To 1/3 of the frosting. The rest leave plain. Follow the directions for mixing cake. Pour into a well greasedand lightly floured 8 x 8 x 2 pan. Bake 350 40-50 minutes. Cool follow the directions for putting together. Best of class senior contest--1950 Pillsbury Cookoff. This is a simple cake that looks fancy. All you do is cut the nut loaf cake into four squares. You frost with white frosting (2) and the other 2 with chocolate--Then arrange them checkerboard fashion and sprinkle nuts over the top. It is a quick mix variation. -----
