Walmart 101: Ways to Save

Save at Walmart!

Walmart is the largest grocery store chain in the United States and the largest retailer in the world. Founded in 1962, Walmart is still a family owned business with over 2 million employees and headquarters in Bentonville, Arkansas. Walmart sells just about everything including groceries, health & beauty, household, apparel, home furnishings, electronics, and much more. Walmart boasts low prices everyday, but you can get even better deals when you add coupons, clearance and your shopping savvy to the mix!

Ways to Save In Store at Walmart:

  • Coupons – Coupons are a great way to save at Walmart, and Walmart accepts several different types of coupons:
    • Manufacturer Coupons – Walmart accepts printable manufacturer coupons that read “Manufacturer Coupon” across the top, have an expiration date, and a scannable barcode. Coupons can be printed in black and white. Walmart also accepts all coupons from the Sunday coupon inserts but does NOT accept print-at-home Internet coupons that require no purchase.
    • Catalina Coupons – Walmart does not have Catalina machines in their stores, however, they do accept Catalina Coupons from other stores, as long as, they are manufacturer coupons with a specific price off a specific item. Walmart does NOT accepts drugstore rewards or Catalinas that are for a dollar amount off a total dollar amount. For example, Walmart will NOT accept $5 off a purchase of $25.
    • Competitor Coupons – Walmart does accept some competitor coupons, as long as they specify a price for a specific item. Walmart does NOT accept a competitor coupon for cents or dollars off or a percentage off. Walmart does NOT allow you to stack a competitor’s store coupon with a manufacturer coupon because they only accept one coupon per item!
  • Overage – This is big! Walmart will pay you the overage if the value of the coupon exceeds the item’s price! The overage can be paid in cash or applied to the rest of your purchases.
  • Rollback – Rollbacks are Walmart’s version of a sale price. You can save big by combining a coupon with a Rollback!
  • Ad Match Guarantee – Walmart will price match a current competitor’s ad right at the register, as long as you let your cashier know you want to price match. A helpful tip is to let the cashier know before they ring the item up since they have to enter the new price manually. In order to price match, the competitor ad must list a specific item at a specific price. However, Walmart will also price match a BOGO as long as a specific price is listed. Keep in mind that Walmart will NOT price match a total, such as Spend $30, get $10 off.

I find that I spend a lot more at Walmart because despite the fact that their prices are generally lower than most, most coupons require you to buy 2 to save the money. Doesn't work for me. I'm better at TOPS by matching up coupons to the flyer.

An easy way to purchase your items on your shopping list is to do this on and if you spend $45.00 or more than everything ships free, now that is a GREAT way to shop.

WalMart is the most economical place to do most of your shopping, especially if you are on a fixed income, but they are lacking in customer service so you are on your own when it comes for finding things and checkout can be a nightmare. I love that they price match since two of our local, and expensive, stores always have a great selection of BOGO and when I have coupons for these items I can really save.

gather up your local ads for all the stores so u can ad match the price for yours groceries. Then clip your coupons for them to get the best prices for your money. You can't beat those kinds of prices when u save money to make your dollars stretch. Save money, live better like walmart says for their slogan.

great for price matching and coupons

Can we talk cashiers? Where are they? Walmart has alot of good deals, mostly on their brand names, but it's a pain taking up your whole Saturday standing in line when there are only 3 cashiers in the store to check everyone out. I buy my health and beauty aids and dog food there - that's about it.
kmarleah4 years ago
You only seem to get the better deals for food here if they are the Great Value brand of Walmart unless you have some really good coupons for the original brands. You really have to watch the register screen because there have been many times that I have purchased an item on deep clearance and they would charge me almost what the full price was. They are ALWAYS short on cashiers. Lines are ALWAYS too long. If you are ever in a hurry and need to pick up something quick I would go to a different store because even though they have the self checkouts those are usually filled for a while. If someones that has WIC and an item is is question I have seen 2 employees trying to get assistance from a manager for the manager to tell them they don't know the answer to help them. Come on....they are the management! Since when can't a manager make a decision? We don't shop Walmart as much any more if we can at all help it.

Overall, their prices on brand name items are not the best (cereal for instance), but their brand and with price matching, you can save a lot on your grocery bill.

Make a trip once or twice a week to get needed items for my household.
