The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), or food stamps, is a federal government program that is administered in every state. The program provides benefits for people with little to no income so they are able to get nutritional food.
People all over Colorado- in cities like Denver, Colorado City and Pueblo- are using food stamps to make ends meet. Using food stamps is nothing to be embarrassed about or ashamed of. You're doing the best you can for yourself and your family.
In Colorado, SNAP is known as the Colorado Food Assistance Program and it is administered through the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services. The Program is offered in every county in Colorado.
You can apply for food stamp benefits through the Program using a variety of methods including online, by mail, in person, or by fax.
You can check your eligibility for food stamp assistance and apply online through the PEAK online service. You can also check your benefits amounts there.
You can also contact your local county office and pick up an application. Or you could download an application, fill it out, and bring it in. You can also contact your county office if you would prefer to have the application faxed or mailed to you.
If you have any questions with your application, or need help filling it out, be sure to contact your local county office. You can also find information on applying for food stamp assistance in different counties, including El Paso, Jefferson, Boulder and Arapahoe, on the county websites.
Once you've returned your application (in person, by mail, or by fax), you will need to do an interview. The interview may be in person or on the phone and, in some cases, could be the same day that you return your application.
You will need to verify your identity as part of the interview. You can do this by bringing in certain identification documents such as your:
Your interview will be with a Food Assistance Worker who can answer your questions and discuss your eligibility.
You will be notified of your eligibility for food stamp assistance after your interview.
You must be a Colorado resident and meet certain income requirements in order to qualify for food stamp assistance. You will have to provide proof of your residency, citizenship status and income and basic expenses.
You must meet certain income limits in order to qualify. The current gross monthly income limits for households up to 5 people are listed below:
For households greater than 5 people, and other income limitation information, talk to your local office or check with the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services.
If you are eligible for food stamp benefits, you will be given an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card called the Colorado QUEST Card. This functions as a debit card that you can use in any store in Colorado that accepts the QUEST card.
The day of each month that you receive your benefits will depend on the last digit in your Social Security Number. You can read more about this and how to use your card or ask your local county office for details.
You can also use the PEAK website to monitor your monthly benefits amounts.
By using grocery coupons with your food stamp benefits, you'll be able to free up even more cash to help pay for utilities and other necessities. Grocery Coupon Network has thousands of online, printable coupons to make life even easier.
