You must be a U.S. citizen or approved legal foreign resident and a resident of Kentucky to receive food assistance benefits. If you are between 16 and 60 years of age and don't meet other exemptions, you must also be registered to work and accept suitable job opportunities.
Your household must also meet certain income and resource requirements. A household will include your spouse and your children, though children over 21 living with their parents may qualify for their own food stamp benefits.
Your household cannot have more than $2,000 in assets, or $3,000 if someone in your household is 60 or older. There may be certain exceptions as to what counts as an "asset." You can ask about these during the application process.
Your household income will also determine whether you are eligible for SNAP benefits. When calculating your income, your wages will be used, but certain expenses, like utilities and rent, may be deducted. Currently, the income limits for Kentucky households are as follows:
For households larger than 8, add $4,862 for each additional person.
