The Food Stamp program was brought about to aid families who need help in meeting their monthly food needs. At one point in time, food stamps were actually stamps which displayed a dollar amount. Now food stamps are in the form of EBT or debit cards. This is a much more efficient and easier way to distribute and monitor funds.
Families then use these cards to supplement their monthly grocery expenses. Only authorized stores can accepted these cards. In addition to the use of these food stamp debit cards, there are many other ways to save on your grocery bills (stretching your food stamp funds) such as coupons and making sure to take advantage of promotions.
There are a few ways to apply for food stamps in Ohio
Food Assistance is available for low income families that need help meeting their monthly grocery expenses. Food stamps are just one way to help with food costs. Some other ways include shopping during store or brand promotions at your local stores. Cutting and saving coupons found online, in newspapers, on social media sites, or given out by manufacturers. Some local stores in Ohio even allow you to double the value of your coupons, maximizing your savings at the register.
If you are trying to determine if your income level makes you eligible for food stamps, this may help. Your household income cannot exceed 130% of the poverty level (as determined by the government). What does this mean exactly? Well, for example, a family of four's household gross income cannot exceed $27,560). This income line does change from time to time, so be sure to check with your local government office to check on income requirements.
Be sure to fill out all information on the application to the best of your ability. You will be asked to include copies of your proof of income (pay stubs), proof of citizenship or social security card, if pregnant - you need a note from doctor, verification of rent/mortgage cost, utility costs, child care expenses and any insurance proof. You will need to bring the social security card or proof of citizenship for everyone in your household that does not work as well.
Food Stamps and assistance funds are distributed through an Ohio Direction Card. This card acts as a debit card. The Ohio Direction Card can only be used at authorized Ohio stores and only on eligible food items.
