Food stamps stamps are a benefits program that is designed to provide families with little to no income the ability to purchase food. People all over Oklahoma use food stamps to continue putting healthy, nutritious food on the table for their families.
The food stamp assistance program is called the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in Oklahoma, and is administered through the Oklahoma Department of Human Services.
There is also a nutrition education program, called the SNAP Nutrition Education Program (SNAP Ed) that is a partnership between the Department of Human Services, Oklahoma State University, and the USDA.
There is no reason to feel shame or be embarrassed about using food stamps. People just like you use them to make sure their families can still have nutritious meals. In fact, more than 600,000 people in Oklahoma receive food stamp benefits each month.
There are certain eligibility requirements for getting food stamp assistance. Find out if you qualify and how to get the application process started.
In order to receive food stamps through SNAP, you must be an Oklahoma resident and meet certain income requirements. The amount of benefits you receive is based on how many people are in your household and what your need is.
Currently, the monthly household income requirements are as follows:
You may be able to make deductions when calculating your income for expenses like shelter, utilities and child care.
You will need to fill out an application for SNAP benefits. You can get the application through your local Oklahoma Department of Human Services Center, a Social Security Office, at other one stop centers, or you can download the forms online.
Your local Human Services Center will be located in your county- such as in Tulsa County or Comanche County. Depending on the size of your county, there may be more than one local office, such as in Cleveland County.
Once the application is complete, you will need to return it to your local Human Services Center and a worker there will schedule a face-to-face interview with you. You may also be able to do the interview by telephone if you're unable to do the interview in person.
The county worker will go through your application with you and answer your questions. You will also need to bring certain information with you to verify your identity, residency, proof of citizenship, proof of income, and proof of your assets. You can bring documents such as your driver's license, income statements, bank statements, utility bills and rental agreements for these purposes.
You will receive a notice in the mail telling you if you're eligible for food stamps. If you're eligible, you'll get your food stamp benefits within 30 days, unless you are in urgent need of them and have little to no money, in which case you could get the food stamps within 7 days.
Once you're eligible, you'll be sent an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card that will have your monthly benefits. You use this card like a debit card at any store where it's accepted to purchase eligible food items.
You can't buy everything with food stamps. For example, you can't purchase cleaning products, or items like toothpaste with them. Make sure you're saving everything you can by using grocery coupons on your shopping trips.
