SNAP in Texas

Are you and your family struggling to get the groceries needed to create proper meals? You may want to look into applying for the food assistance program in Texas.

You can apply and be granted monthly Food Stamps if you are deemed eligible based on a few criteria- income amount earned, household number, and resources allotted by the government. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is not the same as welfare, it was put in place to help low-income families and individuals purchase nutritious food.

If you are denied food stamp benefits (even if you are eligible), you should strongly consider starting to coupon. This is an easy and free way to cut your grocery bills considerably during each shopping trip. There are many couponing methods you can use; bogo (buy one get one), rebates, doubling of coupons, stacking etc. Learn about these couponing strategies and more on Grocery Coupon Network.

Where to Apply For SNAP Benefits

Whether you are in Houston, Austin, Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth or any other city in the great big state of Texas, you have the right to apply for food assistance benefits. To find out if you are eligible based on income, household members and resources, you must officially apply.

To apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) you will first need to create an account online. After doing this, you can fill out the proper application on the Texas run site. You can also reach out to your local HHSC (Texas Health and Human Services Commission) office or call 2-1-1 toll free.

Need Benefits NOW?

There is an expedited way to get benefits. Emergency SNAP benefits can be given out when:

  • Family's monthly income is less than $150 a month and monthly resources total less than $100.
  • When a family's income is less than their most recent month's expenses for rent/mortgage and utilities.

When funds are so low that you need immediate food assistance, this is when you should really be considering taking advantage of coupons. There plenty of ways to save and even opportunities for you to get free products and groceries. Look through Grocery Coupon Network for tips on cutting grocery bills and even coupons to your local stores.

To find out if you are eligible for emergency SNAP funds, contact a local HHSC (Texas Health and Human Services Commission) benefits office or call 2-1-1.

Common Myths About SNAP

  • "I cannot have savings to apply"- This is not true. You can still be eligible for benefits if you have up to $5,000 in savings or assets as a family, up to $3,000 for individuals.
  • "Food Stamps are only for people who don't or are unable to work"- An able-bodied person between 18-60 can receive SNAP benefits for three months during a three year period. This time period can be extended if necessary through the Texas Workforce Commission.
  • "I must repay any food assistance benefits at some point."- This is most definitely false. If you were rightly granted SNAP benefits these do not need to be returned at any point. SNAP is a government funded right for those that need it and qualify.
  • "I am embarrassed, people will somehow know I am using food stamps."- First of all there is no reason at all to be embarrassed. Food assistance programs are paid by you and the American people through taxes. This program was created to help those that need a little extra at times in need. Nowadays, funds are not "stamps" at all- they are given out via a type of debit card, more specifically a Lone Star card. Therefore, when paying in line, it will look as though you are paying with a regular debit or credit card.

Find Ways to Cut Your Grocery Bills

With this troubling economy, we all need to find new ways to save in every aspect of life. But let's face it, we need food. So why not stretch every dollar we have (and even every food stamp dollar we have) so that we can provide our families with nutritious foods.
