In Wisconsin, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is called FoodShare Wisconsin. The FoodShare program is administered through the Wisconsin Department of Health and Human Services. There are several options for applying including online, in person, by phone or by mail.
You can apply online for FoodShare benefits through the ACCESS system no matter where you live in Wisconsin. This may be the fastest way to apply and get your benefits.
You also have the option of applying in person at your local agency. You will need to find your local county, such as Waukesha or Chippewa, and then look at the map of consortia to determine where your local agency is. You can also find your agency's location, phone number and hours using that resource. You could also apply by phone by calling your local agency.
To apply by mail, if you live in Milwaukee County, contact:
PO Box 05676
Milwaukee, WI 53205
If you live outside of Milwaukee County and want to apply by mail, contact:
PO Box 5234
Janesville, WI 53547-5234
You will be notified about whether you have been approved or denied for food stamp benefits within 30 days from the day you submit your application through the agency. However, you may find out much sooner if you qualify for priority benefits.
If you meet the requirements outlined below, you may be able to get FoodShare food stamp benefits within 7 days of your application.
You may be eligible for priority food stamps if your household has:
Be sure to ask your local agency if you think you qualify for Priority FoodShare.
Your eligibility for food stamp assistance will depend on several factors, like your income, your assets, other benefits you may receive and the number of people who live in your home. You can use the online "Am I Eligible" tool to check your eligibility.
The current monthly income limits for Wisconsin FoodShare benefits are listed below.
You must also have a net monthly household income at or under the following numbers:
You may also get certain income credits for certain expenses like dependent care, shelter, utilities and child support. Check with you local agency for further income limits and information and for help calculating your income.
Your FoodShare benefits will be automatically added each month to a card that you keep with you, called the QUEST card. You can check the balance of your QUEST card online.
You will be able to use these benefits to pay for food items, like bread, meat and dairy products. You will not be able to use the benefits for non-food items, like soap or toothpaste, or for hot, already prepared foods.
You can use as much or as little of the benefits each month as you need to. Use your QUEST card in any store where it's accepted.
You can also return unused items to the store if you decide you don't need them, and get your benefits back on your card. Just make sure to bring your card and your receipt.
While food stamp assistance can you help you get the food you need, combining your food stamps with the grocery coupons you find online from Grocery Coupon Network can help you save even more. That way you can free up extra cash to help cover your other expenses.
You can even find coupons for your favorite stores, like Walmart, so you can plan out your shopping trips.
People all over Wisconsin, from Green Bay to La Crosse, are using FoodShare benefits to provide their families with healthy and nutritious foods.
Times are tough. Make sure you're doing the most for yourself and your family. Take advantage of your available resources and have some fun searching for coupons and healthy, nutritious recipes for you and your family.
