Coupon Tip: Waste Less Food
I heard a staggering statistic today that American’s throw out an aver of 40% of food they purchase. AVERAGE! It’s easy to get caught up in buying too much of a great deal or being too busy to use what you have but I wanted to share some of my tips with you on how to waste less food.
Donate extras- other people need the food that you are not going to use. Donate it and that saves you from wasting it and gives someone else food they need!
Plan your meals- plan ahead for the food you are going to use and make your shopping list. I used to be a dinner-only planner but now I do other meals as well and it’s much more helpful and easy to wake up and know what’s for breakfast!
Make a list and stick to it- as couponers, we know this is essential to saving. This also helps waste less food and keeps us aware of what we are buying.
Use your freezer- You can freeze a ton of stuff and this can keep it a little longer until you are able to use it. Freeze cheese, milk, bread, meat and even produce to stretch it out a bit. Look online for tips on how to freeze different produce to maintain nutritional values.
Bake or cook ahead- I almost enjoy when I have bananas going bad because it forces me to make some tasty banana bread! If you have meat that you need to use, cook it and freeze it or make a dish and freeze it for later use. This will save you time and money!
Have a leftover night for dinner- if you have these (we have two hungry boys so we don’t always have them!), plan for one night to clear out the fridge and let every person pick their choice to help you get rid of the leftovers.
Plan accordingly- if you are going out of town, give extra food to a neighbor or friend who will use it.
