Frugal Tip: Shop Store Resets
Yesterday, my coupon-loving Mom went shopping at her local Dominick’s (a Safeway affiliate store) and stumbled upon a store reset.
What’s a store reset? Generally speaking, a store reset is when a store organizes and/or reorganizes its merchandise to improve profitability. It involves relocating or removing products and giving best selling products more space and/or more locations. Often, a store will “reset” one section of the store at a time. This makes resets a prime opportunity for great deals on items the store no longer plans to carry, or items that will have less shelf space.
She called me right away (knowing I’m a coupon nut myself), to ask my opinion on some of the clearance deals she was looking at – and boy oh boy, she did quite well! The store was in the process of “resetting” it’s cleaning and laundry products, and it appears that some of the natural cleaners will be on their way out. With clearance prices of 75% off, she really racked up the deals. To sweeten the deal further, she found coupons some of the Mrs. Meyer’s Counter Top Sprays!
Here’s a rundown of what she purchased and how much she spent:
Seventh Generation Tall Kitchen Trash Bags 30ct., $1.45 each
Bought (4), for a total of $5.80 or less than $.05 per bag!
Seventh Generation 2ply Facial Tissue 85ct., $.55 each
Bought (7), for a total of $3.85 or $.006470588 per tissue – way less than a penny each
ECover Toilet Bowl Cleaner 25oz., $1.32 each
ECover Dishwasher Tablets 25ct., $2 each
Bought (2), for a total of $4 or $.08 per tablet
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Dryer Sheets 80ct., $2.18 each
Bought (4), for a total of $8.72 or about $.03 per sheet
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Surface Wipes 24ct., $1.25 each
Bought (4), for a total of $5 or about $.05 per wipe
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Countertop Spray 16oz., $1.12 each
Used (3) $1/2 Mrs. Meyer’s Product (hangtag on spray bottles)
Final Price: $.62 each!
Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day Countertop Spray Refills 32oz., $2 each
Bought (4) for a total of $8
Grand Total: $40.41 - An amazing price, especially because the items she purchased are all eco-friendly and natural, which normally translates into a bigger price tag.
So keep your eyes open and be on the lookout for resets in your local store. If you do see a large amount of clearance, ask an employee if they are doing a reset and if there will be more sections of the store being reset another day. Most of the time, they will be able to give you a heads up, and you can make sure you come back in and check for some great deals – you never know what you might find!
