Rain Checks Are Your Tickets to Getting the Deals You Need

While rain checks may seem to complicate your shopping trip, they are actually a useful tool to help you make the most of your coupons.

Understanding how they work is important, especially if you hope to make use of some of our tips on stockpiling food or personal items.

Video: Couponing 101: How to Do Store Rain Checks

Our Extreme Couponer, Sam, shows you how to take advantage of rain checks when your sale product is not in stock.

What Is a Rain Check?

A rain check is a voucher that allows you an extension on a sale price offered by a particular store when they do not have the qualifying product in stock.

The extensions vary by store: Walgreen's, for example, offers a 30 day extension with a rain check.

Other stores, like CVS, do not have expirations on their rain checks at all.

Be sure to check each store's coupon policies when you plan to ask for a rain check, and to have the store's circular ads in your hands on your trip.

Getting Your Rain Checks

When request a rain check, the store will ask you how many you need.

Take as many as you will use, though some stores will have limits established for the total number you can take.

Having the rain check allows you extra time to collect coupons to use with the sale price, so keep that in mind when you are requesting one.

Using Your Rain Checks Appropriately

Once you have the rain checks, keep them filed away with your coupons for the item.

That way, when the item is back in stock and you are ready to use your rain check, you have everything that you need on hand.

If you have rain checks for multiple items, keep them separated by store so you can check on the item whenever you visit that particular location.

After the sale price for that item has ended and the stock levels have been replenished, it will be much easier for you to find the amount of items you would like.

Not everyone will bother to get rain checks in these situations, so the extension should allow you to purchase several of the items without exhausting the stock levels and denying other shoppers the opportunity.
